The Banderol is a drone-like cruise missile that is now being launched by Russian forces in large numbers against Ukraine. The most recent attack involving a Banderol missile was on the 18th of August. The missile costs around $100,000 to make, making it one of the cheapest deep strike weapons in Russia’s arsenal. The Banderol, which means ‘Parcel’ in Russian, has a range up to 500 kilometres and can be launched from the Orion drone, the Mi-28 attack helicopter and other vehicle-mounted ground-based launchers. As per Ukraine, the Banderol missile uses several foreign-made components, including the jet engine, the microcontroller, and the battery. As per reports, Russia plans to manufacture at least 1,000 Banderol missiles in 2026 as Ukraine struggles to shoot down the missiles due to a shortage in interceptors.
